To take driving lessons in the UK, you must be at least 17 years old. However, if you receive the higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA), you can start learning to drive at 16.
Before starting driving lessons, you must have a provisional driving license. You can apply for this license when you are 15 years and 9 months old.
Driving lessons must be conducted by an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). ADIs are registered and regulated by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and must display a green badge in their car to show their qualification.
While taking driving lessons, learners must display 'L' plates (or 'D' plates in Wales) on the front and back of their vehicle. These indicate that the driver is a learner and requires extra caution from other road users.
The practical driving test includes an eyesight check, vehicle safety questions (show me, tell me), and about 40 minutes of driving, covering various road and traffic conditions. It also includes a segment of independent driving.
The pass rate for the practical driving test in the UK varies by location and other factors, but it generally hovers around 45-50%. This means that about half of the candidates pass the test on their first attempt.
